Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Jan Sunwai: A Shocking Incident Raises Serious Security Concerns
New Delhi, August 20, 2025 – In a disturbing incident during a routine public interaction, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by an unidentified person during the “Jan Sunwai” (public hearing) session held at her Civil Lines camp office. The sudden attack has triggered serious concerns over the security arrangements around the state’s top elected representative.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to eyewitnesses and official sources, the accused, identified as Rakesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya (41), originally from Rajkot in Gujarat, entered the public hearing alleging he had come to submit a complaint. He approached the Chief Minister while showing some documents, and suddenly tried to physically assault her. Security personnel and members of the crowd immediately intervened and managed to overpower the attacker on the spot.
Fortunately, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta did not sustain any serious injuries. She was taken to a nearby hospital for a precautionary check-up and later discharged.

Some reports suggest that he had developed strong resentment against the state government for not opposing the decision more strongly.
Investigators are currently verifying this angle and other possible motives behind the assault.
Political Reactions and Growing Outrage
The incident triggered strong political reactions across party lines. Senior BJP leaders Harish Khurana and Manjinder Singh Sirsa condemned the attack and demanded an immediate review of the Chief Minister’s security arrangements. They also called it “a shocking lapse” and urged the police to uncover the entire conspiracy without delay.
AAP leader and Leader of Opposition Atishi also denounced the violent act, stating that “there is no place for violence in a democracy” and urged the authorities to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted sharply on social media, stating, “If the Chief Minister herself is not safe, how will the ordinary citizens of Delhi feel safe?” She also called on the Union Home Ministry to take the matter seriously and step up security protocols.

Shortly after being discharged from hospital, CM Rekha Gupta took to X (formerly Twitter) to release a personal statement:
“This attack was not just on me but on our commitment to serve the people of Delhi.
I was shaken for a moment, but I am now fine and recovering.
I request well-wishers not to worry — I will soon be back among the people, doing my duty.”
Her statement was widely shared and appreciated by citizens and political leaders, who praised her courage and calmness in the face of such a shocking event.

While investigations are underway, the attack has once again brought the spotlight back on the safety of elected representatives and the adequacy of security protocols in open public events like Jan Sunwai.
