BJP Names CP Radhakrishnan as NDA Candidate for Vice President: A Strategic Move in South India

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday, August 17, 2025, announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections. The decision was taken during a parliamentary board meeting of the party, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several senior leaders.

Who is CP Radhakrishnan?

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, popularly known as CP Radhakrishnan, was born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu. He began his public life at the age of 16 by joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Over the years, he became an influential political figure in Tamil Nadu, serving as the BJP state president and getting elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. Later, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand and subsequently Maharashtra.

Why NDA Chose CP Radhakrishnan

BJP President JP Nadda, while announcing Radhakrishnan’s candidacy, described him as a highly experienced and respected leader with wide acceptability across the country, including Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Radhakrishnan’s governance and constitutional knowledge, highlighting his potential to serve as an inspiring Vice President.

Strengthening BJP’s Presence in South India

Radhakrishnan’s nomination also reflects BJP’s strategic focus on strengthening its political footprint in South India. States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana have traditionally seen limited BJP influence. By nominating a leader with deep roots in Tamil Nadu, the party aims to consolidate support and expand its base in the southern region.

Opposition Response and Electoral Outlook

The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, 2025, with the last date for nominations on August 22. While the opposition INDIA alliance has not yet announced its candidate, political analysts expect them to field a strong contender. Although NDA holds a majority in the electoral college, the opposition’s engagement could make the contest closely watched and politically significant.

Conclusion

CP Radhakrishnan’s nomination as NDA’s Vice President candidate is both a strategic and symbolic move for the BJP. His reputation as an experienced, ethical, and respected leader strengthens the party’s image and enhances its appeal in South India. The upcoming election promises to be an important test of political strategy for both NDA and the opposition, as parties vie for one of the highest constitutional offices in India.
